“Colorado State Senate President John Morse was not your typical arm’s-length, politically calculating legislator when it came to the issue of gun control. As an ex-policeman and paramedic, a man who personally had dealt with armed criminals, been shot at, and helped save the lives of shooting victims in the past…he had a deeply personal connection with the topic, a perspective that endowed him with a unique resolve to fight for the safety of Colorado citizens. But following his gut and doing what he felt was best for his constituents, ironically, turned out not to be what his constituents demanded of him. Morse’s ardent support of five gun-control bills…eventually led to Morse’s and fellow Senator Angela Giron’s recall, making the two politicians the first in Colorado’s history to be unseated in special elections."

The challenges that led to John Morse’s recall—single-issue politics, national money in local elections, and the struggle between conscience and political pressure—are driving today’s division and dysfunction in America. This book connects the lessons of 2013 to the urgent need for civic engagement and integrity in leadership today.

About John

John P. Morse, PhD, CPA, is a former Colorado State Senate President, paramedic, and police officer. In 2013, he became the first and only state Senate President in the nation recalled from office after leading the effort to pass five Colorado gun safety laws. His story is one of resilience, public service, and standing by his principles—even in the face of national controversy. Morse remains committed to public service and inspiring others to stand up for what’s right—even when it’s hard. Now, with more perspective, he’s ready to tell the full story and share insights about how what happened then is a microcosm of the malaise in the US today.
